Kamasutra refers to an ancient Indian scripture that gives practical advice on the art of making love. The Kamasutra defines sex as not a mere contact of human skin-to-skin but an art of connecting body and soul. The terms “Kama” and “Sutra” have definite meanings with the former meaning desire and the latter meaning a thread. In Sanskrit, the terms refer to a set of verses or aphorisms that give shape to a manual.

As has been popularly believed, the Kamasutra is not exclusively about sex, but is a guide book that highlights various aspects of individual and social life such as that of family, pleasure-oriented activities and nature of love.

The Kamasutra has 1250 versus that are divided into 36 chapters that are further organized into 7 parts. Each part offers an excellent commentary on the several different aspects of a householder’s life and responsibility in providing a good sex life and helping in solving sexual issues or problems.

Here is how the 7 parts of the Kamasutra have been divided.

Part 1
The first part of the Kamasutra deals with one’s priorities and goals of life, the dealings of a civilized citizen, tips on how to acquire knowledge, suggestions for intermediaries etc.

Part 2
The second part of the Kamasutra deals with the stimulation of sexual desire, the kinds of embraces, amorous making with the help of nails, caressing and kissing, amorous biting gestures, slapping followed by moaning, different positions of copulation, precursors as well as conclusions of sex. The second part describes over 64 types of sexual acts. It is for this part of Kamasutra that it has derived the notorious name for itself.

Part 3
The third part of the Kamasutra deals with different types of marriages, getting the girl, making her feel relaxed, surviving alone and union by way of marriage.

Part 4
The fourth part of Kamasutra deals with the conduct of one wife. If a husband has more than one wife, their conduct has been described as the conduct of other wives.

Part 5
The fifth part of Kamasutra deals with the behaviour of men and women i.e. tips on how to get to know each other, evaluating sentiments, behaviour in the women’s quarters and the king’s pleasures.

Part 6
The sixth part of Kamasutra gives advice by amorous assistants on finding a steady lover, making a choice of lovers, earning money, making up with a former lover, renewing friendship, profits and losses and occasional profits.

Part 7
The seventh part of the Kamasutra deals with improving physical attraction and lighting up fire in a damaged sexual relationship or power.
