Spammers do it to keep mail from being returned to them. There is no way for you to stop it. If spam is being sent to people in your contact list it indicates that someone got into your account and took the list. They no longer need your account to use the list. Change your password ASAP if you are worried about it, also check your sent messages to make sure your account isn't being used to send spam with, if it is then make sure you change your security settings on your email, regularly clear cookies, do NOT auto-save your passwords. This should solve, if not reduce the chances of this happening again
