Why do health insurance companies cover drugs like viagra but not birth control pills?

I know life isn't fair but this seems like a truly unfair and sexist practice.

It doesn't work the way you described. EVERY health insurance company CAN cover things like Viagra AND inception manage pills, and abortion, and parenthood for that matter. Some employers choose NOT to purchase those coverages, beat it the insurance throng, when they take out their organize plans. It's charge out of a menu, and the person who buys the policy, picks which coverages they poverty grate on nerves purchase. Nothing sexist or unfair on every side it, it's all on every side COST.

Actually, it is the opposite. Some insurance companies do cover birth control for women. No insurance company covers birth control for men. Also, Viagra is something that some couples need so that they can have children. Birth control is something you use so that you can avoid having children.

Viagra isn't a drug that insurance companies will pay for unless there is a condition that is being treated other than ED. The dr's office will have to call for pre authorization before it gets approved. All Generic birth control is covered by insurance companies.

I don't know any insurance company that doesn't cover birth control pills. I think you got the facts mixed up. Viagra on the other hand is not medically necessary so it's not likely to be covered. There are times when the group (your employer) choose not to buy Rx coverage that include birth controls such as any Cathlic groups for example. This is all up to your employer, don't blame it on the insurance company if your employer is too cheap to buy something on your behave.

LaDoris, I have worked in the health insurance industry for over 20 years. You will find this with many group insurance plans. Group health plans are basically written by the group (or corporation) and implemented by the insurance company. This means that the company you work for can make Viagra or birth control a benefit or not. The exception to this rule is if you live in a state that mandates this drug (or medical service) has to be a benefit. This mandate will override an insurance company policy. There are some corporations that play the sexist game of allowing Viagra but disallowing birth control pills. Many people don't know it but Erectile Dysfunction medication is covered by some Medicare Advantage plans. Meaning grandpa Eddie can still get his groove on.
